Never have I been more hungry than when I am producing milk. People seem to always talk about food cravings and the need to constantly eat during pregnancy, but no one prepared me for how the cravings and hunger double when breastfeeding.
We try to eat as organic as possible, which can get pretty spendy. In fact, my favorite store-bought organic protein bars cost a whopping $2.75 each. The homemade ones, even with all organic ingredients, cost about $0.78 each!
So I started looking into making my own organic protein bars at home and was surprised at how easy it was! My favorite recipe I found was from Alyssa Rivers at the Recipe Critic.
Although not specified in her original recipe, I used all organic ingredients. If you are not sure where to start with organic products, here are the products I used in mine:
- Bobs Red Mill Organic Flaxseed Meal
- Bobs Red Mill Organic Oat Bran
- 365 Whole Foods Organic Peanut Butter
- 365 Whole Foods Organic Honey
- Simply Organic Vanilla Extract
- Salt
- Garden of Life Vegan Protein Powder – I used chocolate flavor
- Organic Chocolate chips – I used ones from the bulk section at our local Co-op but there are many options out there like these Equal Exchange Organic Chocolate Chips
Mix all the ingredients, press into a pan, and toss it in the fridge. You can find the whole recipe here.

These are so quick and easy to make even for a busy mom of three children under the age of three. In fact, even my husband can make them while I am busy feeding the babies.
